Babylon (from Akkadian: Babili, Babilla) was a city-state of ancient Mesopotamia, the remains of which are found in present-day Al Hillah, Babil Province, Iraq, about 85 kilometers (55 mi) south of Baghdad....With the recovery of Babylonian independence, a new era of architectural activity ensued, and Nebuchadnezzar II (604–561 BC) made Babylon into one of the wonders of the ancient world. He ordered the complete reconstruction of the imperial grounds, including rebuilding the Etemenanki ziggurat and the construction of the Ishtar Gate  — the most spectacular of eight gates that ringed the perimeter of Babylon.
